Kirsi Mattila

Scriptwriter, Director, Producer

Producer Kirsi Mattila has a licentiate degree in theatre science from the University of Helsinki. She began her career as director and scriptwriter in 1994. Her film, Marzia, My Friend (2015), set in Afghanistan, won the Best Human Rights Feature Award at its international premiere in Galway Film Fleadh, and has subsequently won five other awards.

Kirsi has created videos for several organizations, serving not only as writer, director and producer but also as cinematographer and editor as well. She has also produced radio series and TV shows for the Finnish Broadcasting Company Yle.

Today Kirsi focuses on producing documentary films. In 2020, she produced the company’s first documentary feature, The Beloved Daughter, directed by Tiina Madisson. She also produced Karoliina Gröndahl’s The Labour of Pain and Joy, which premiered in 2024 and Mohamed El Aboudi’s The Last Chapter, 2025. Her other work as producer includes three short documentaries by an Afghan filmmaker Hashim Didari, released 2017–2022.

Kirsi is one of the founding members of Icebreaker Productions and nowadays the chair of the board.
